British team retains its lead at the European Eventing Championships after second day of dressage

Team Great Britain has confirmed its place at the top of the FEI Eventing European Championships leaderboard at the end of dressage day two.

Britain’s team score is 64.8 going into tomorrow’s cross-country phase, just 4.9 penalties ahead of Germany on 69.7. France lies third with a team score of 77.3.

In the individual standings, Britain’s Ros Canter (Allstar B) has slotted into second after a lovely test from Allstar B today. They are only 0.4 of a penalty behind the defending individual champions, Ingrid Klimke and SAP Hale Bob for Germany, while Britain’s Nicola Wilson and JL Dublin are third.

Less than one penalty separates the top three.

Kitty King also rode her test today and lies eighth individually with Vendredi Biats. They are the team’s discount score, with Piggy French and Brookfield Inocent occupying sixth.

Britain’s individuals, Sarah Bullimore (Corouet) and Izzy Taylor (Monkeying Around) lie fifth and 20th respectively.

It means Ingrid is on target for a record three-in-a-row individual European title with the same horse.

“I’m keeping my fingers crossed,” said the German rider who missed the Tokyo Olympics after suffering a serious chest injury in a fall at Baborówko, in Poland in May.

The cross-country phase kicks off at 11.00am local time tomorrow.

After completing her dressage test yesterday, Piggy French described the Mike Etherington-Smith-designed course as “very technical”.

“The single fences are big enough as well, a lot of twists and turns, so we are going to have to be on our A-game,” she said. “It’s a proper championship track for sure. This is not going to be a dressage competition.”

Aimi is the editor of Your Horse. She has worked in equestrian journalism for more than 20 years and has owned and ridden horses all her life. She believes that helping owners better understand how horses think, learn and communicate leads to kinder training, stronger partnerships and better welfare, and these are the subjects she's most passionate about covering. Growing up on a farm in Devon, Aimi was a member of Tetcott & South Tetcott Pony Club, joining with her first pony, a New Forest called Prudence, before moving on to a Danish Warmblood, Marcus. She competed in all disciplines but particularly enjoyed eventing, and later went on to rehome and retrain more than 10 ex-racehorses, as well as dabbling in point-to-pointing. Now a mum of two, Aimi can often be found hacking her Thoroughbred through the Oxfordshire countryside while flying the flag for Your Horse's #Hack1000Miles challenge. Rumour has it that a pony (or two) could soon be joining the family…
