Four eco conscious equestrian businesses have launched a six month social media campaign to encourage horse owners to make sustainable changes in their everyday horse care routines.

The #smallchangechallenge launched on Tuesday 7 April with the aim of showing participants what a difference the small things can have on the environment and how much money can be saved through better choices.

The fun and interactive campaign has been designed by Ruth Dancer and Zoe Rudge of equine sustainability consultancy White Griffin, Belle Richardson of award-winning water saving device SealStop and Jess Vickers of environmentally friendly bedding company Unibed.

Different themes

Each month the challenge will focus on a different sustainability theme such as ditching single use plastics, repairing and reusing items and saving water in a yard. Participants are encouraged to make one small change related to the theme in their everyday routines each month.

The monthly challenges will be set via the @equestrians4nature handle on social media.

Participants are encouraged to film themselves ‘doing the change’ before posting on their socials using the hashtag #smallchangechallenge.

Each month, those who submit their videos will be entered into a draw to win equestrian prizes.

The monthly challenges are:

April – #shoplocal: encouraging equestrians to reduce travel miles and help local businesses by shopping for equestrian items locally.

May – #plasticfreeswitch: asking those taking part to switch out single use plastics for plastic free alternatives.

June – #toxicfreeyards: challenging participants to find natural alternatives in their equestrian day to day lives to help get rid of toxins.

July – #rainwaterdance: inspiring horse owners to think about how to save water and championing responsible water use around the yard.

August – #secondhandsteals: advocating those taking part to consider buying second hand.

September – #repairreuserecycle: inviting equestrians to show off their best examples of repairs, upcycled crafts and all things reused to highlight the importance of looking after the things we already own.

“Sustainability is for everyone”

“I want people to realise that sustainability is for everyone, it is just about thinking differently about how we do things.” said Ruth.

“In a world that feels overwhelming right now, making very small changes on a continuous basis is the best way to create positive change.

“Looking after our planet is not expensive, difficult or just for other people and it can benefit your horse’s wellbeing and your bank account too!”
