Nine runners raised over £15,000 for working animal charity Brooke and the Worshipful Company of Farriers (WCF) Charitable Trust by completing the London Landmarks Half Marathon last weekend.

The London Landmarks Half Marathon, which started on Pall Mall and finished near Downing Street, took place last Sunday (12 April).

Raising the profile

Among the runners was WCF member Henry Wallis (pictured top) who raised £1,300 for the two charities.

“The fact the half marathon goes through the old city reinforces the link between the WCF as the oldest equine welfare organisation in the world and the important work Brooke is doing,” said Henry who is from Gloucestershire.

“I was swept along with the energy of the day…we’ve raised the profile of Brooke’s work in a significant way.”

Combining passions

Marc Jerram, a working WCF farrier from Staffordshire, also took part and raised £1,000 to help Brooke fund education and resources for farriers in developing countries, where expertise and materials are in short supply.

“Brooke provides first class opportunities to those working with horses in low-resource environments, and if there’s anything I can do to support, I’m happy to help,” said Marc.

“These animals work so hard and deserve the best help they can get. It also helps that I’m a keen runner so can combine my two passions for one purpose!”

More Brooke supporters will run around the capital’s streets next week in the London Marathon.

New award scheme

Brooke has recently partnered with the WCF to launch a new award scheme which celebrates the work of farriers globally.

The Farriery Progress Awards will be given out annually to Brooke-trained farriers who have shown commitment to the welfare of working horses, donkeys and mules.

The inaugural winners were Salou Fall from Senegal, Zerihun Girma from Ethiopia and Muhammad Maqbool from Pakistan.
