A pony walked away from a terrifying trailer incident on Saturday (20 August) thanks to a team of rescuers.

The three-year-old was travelling in a trailer on the A500 in Barthomley, near Crewe, when it was involved in a road traffic collision with a heavy goods vehicle at around 1pm.

The trailer turned onto its side and the grey, named Romeo, was trapped inside.

Firefighters attended the scene, with engines from Alsager, Lymm and Bollington along with a crew from Leek of Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

A vet was also called to the roadside to assist the rescue of the pony, as well as rescue transport from On Point Equine Transport.

Matt of On Point told Your Horse the trailer was at a 90 degree angle and had become separated from the four-by-four towing vehicle in the collision.

“Once the fire brigade winched the trailer back onto its wheels and it was fully stable, they dropped ramp and we got poor Romeo back onto my box,” he said.

“He was a bit wobbly as he came off, which was to be expected, and took a few minutes to think about going into mine. Then we took him to vets for once over and he was cleared, he was picture perfect to travel.”

“The vets made them a cup of tea while they checked Romeo out and sugar helped bring them around as they were a bit shell-shocked.

“Romeo was as good as gold.”
