The British Horse Society (BHS) and Police Scotland are working to improve conditions for riders hacking on the roads with Operation Lose the Blinkers.

One of the recent operations took place in Dundonald, Ayrshire, where 16 drivers were stopped and spoken to about passing horses slowly and maintaining a safe distance.

In addition, nine drivers were commended on their driving around the horses.

“BHS Scotland is working in partnership with Police Scotland Mounted Unit and Road Policing Unit to raise awareness and educate people on the safe passing of horses through the Lose the Blinkers initiative,” said Georgina Charlton, BHS National Manager for Scotland.

“Lose the Blinkers gives us a fantastic opportunity to engage directly with drivers and help make Scotland’s roads safer for horses and riders.”

In 2026 alone, 188 drivers have been educated on safely passing horses and 164 have been commended for passing with patience and consideration, thanks to Lose the Blinkers.

“Crucially, our Action Days respond directly to incidents recorded by equestrians through the BHS Horse i app,” added Georgina.

“We’d encourage people to continue reporting their experiences because that information helps us and Police Scotland target activity where it’s needed most. Together, we can improve driver awareness and help keep horses and riders safer on Scotland’s roads.”
