People working and volunteering across the equestrian sector are being asked to complete a national survey exploring the challenges and opportunities those involved in the industry face.
The survey will examine recruitment and retention, career progression, skills and training, inclusion, wellbeing and long-term workforce sustainability.
Launched by British Equestrian and led by researchers at Hartpury University, the research also aims to address gaps in existing data about the equestrian workforce.
“This project is an important opportunity to build a clearer understanding of the people who underpin the equestrian sector,” said Professor Jane Williams, Director of Research at Hartpury University.
“By combining our robust research expertise with meaningful engagement across one of our specialist industries, we’ll create the evidence needed to inform future workforce development and help British Equestrian build a more sustainable and inclusive sector.”
First phase
The national survey is the first phase of a wider research programme being delivered by Hartpury University on behalf of British Equestrian through the remainder of 2026 and into 2027. It is hoped that everyone from grooms, coaches and yard staff to freelancers, officials and volunteers will complete the survey.
Survey findings will be followed up through interviews and focus groups to explore the lived experiences of people working and volunteering across the industry.

“The equestrian workforce is the backbone of our sport and activity, and with increasing pressures, we need strong evidence to support the sector in the best way possible.
“This survey is the vital first step. We want to hear from as many people as possible, from volunteers and coaches to yard staff, grooms, officials and business owners.
“Every response will help us better understand the workforce and shape the support, training and opportunities needed for the future.”

All responses are anonymous and the surveys close on Saturday 31 October 2026. Participants can choose to be entered into a prize draw to win one of five £50 LeMieux vouchers.
