Mountain Horse Unify Tech Fleece Unisex and Double Pocket Waist Bag

I’m all for a smart layer such as a technical fleece to wear over a polo-short while riding, as hoodies and big chunky jumpers can be really restrictive and detract from the elegance of riding.

I get hot when riding too, so this is a lightweight zip-up top perfect for autumn and spring when it’s still fairly mild but you want something lightweight to cover your arms while riding. I’ve had this top about five months and worn it most days at the yard to ride and carry out general yard chores.

In the summer, I find it hard finding somewhere to keep my phone and keys, especially when I’m wearing strappy tops, as some of my breeches don’t have pockets, so the waist bag has been brilliant.

First impressions

Steph wearing the Unify Tech Fleece

It says it’s a fleece, but it doesn’t have the classic fluffy outer material of a fleece – it’s more like a stretchy lycra material. The colour is lovely – I got it in navy but it’s got white running through it too, so it’s more two-tone. It looks smart with a pair of riding tights.

The waist bag looked neat and tidy, and I like the navy blue colour with the Mountain Horse logo on the front.

Fit

I’m a size 8/10 in tops so went for the small and it fitted really well. The arms are a good length and it’s a good length in the body too. It has thumb holes at the cuffs for those who like that sort of thing.

The waist bag comes in one size, but the strap is adjustable so yo can make it bigger or smaller to suit your waist.

Performance

Double Pocket Waist Bag

This top has been the perfect layer for the spring and summer months while riding, grooming and poo-picking. For those days when there’s a strong breeze, or when I get to the yard early and the sun isn’t hot yet, it’s the perfect layer over a thin top. The collar is a nice touch as it keeps draughts out without being too restrictive round the neck. It’ll be a great layer in the winter too as it’s not at all bulky and will easily fit under a gilet and coat.

The two front pockets with zips means my phone and keys wont fall out while I’m riding, and the main zip is clearly durable, but it can get a bit stuck on the lining if you’re not careful.

The brushed lining is soft and I’ve worn it with just a vest top underneath on warmer days, and it’s been really cosy.

It’s stretchy and comfortable to ride in – it’s not restrictive in any way – and washes and dries well, looking like new.

The waistbag was a brilliant addition to my summer wardrobe as it meant I could still carry my essential items with me, safely stored out of the way. It’s quite neat and compact so didn’t restrict me in any way while riding or getting on with jobs.

Value for money

At £50, this top is really good value for money. It’s mid-range compared to other similar products and has lasted really well so far. It’s a great addition to my riding wardrobe.

For £18, the waistbag is great value for money.
