The young rider of a fourth-generation homebred horse has been recognised for her success on the eventing circuit aged just 14.

Jessica Burdess, a year nine pupil at Durham Cathedral School, was the recipient of The Howden Way and British Eventing (BE)’s Spotlight Award in June.

“I live and breathe for my horses and [winning] really does make those after-school, dark, windy nights worth it,” said Jessica, whose mother, Sara, a five-star level event rider, has contested numerous Badmintons and Burghleys.

Sara bred 18-year-old Tale of Two Shivers (‘Murphy’) with Jessica in mind and produced the horse to advanced level, amassing 110 BE points in the process, before handing over the reins.

“She always said he was meant to be mine and I’ve been riding him at home since I was six,” added Jessica.

Surpassed expectations

Will Murray, a BE under-18 coach, said the horse — who is also the winner of multiple working hunter titles around the country and competed at Horse of the Year Show with several jockeys — has “far surpassed expectations”.

“He is now acting as school master to 14-year-old Jessica who works incredibly hard, often riding before and after school,” added Will.

“The pair jumped double clear round their first two-star at Belsay (1), which is testament to Jessica’s hard work and dedication.”

Jessica described Murphy as her “horse of a lifetime”.

“He’s helped me progress while having so much fun,” she said.

The teenager has three horses to event this season — the other two are at BE90 and BE100 level — and they’re all owned by her grandmother, Jenny Deary.

Jessica is aiming at more two-star runs — including at the inaugural Scone Palace Horse Trials — and also hopes to qualify Murphy to compete in the show ring at Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) in October.

A brilliant example

Every month, BE’s lead coaches are invited to nominate a recipient from their region for their contributions to the eventing community.

The winner of that month’s Spotlight Award is then selected by two-time Olympic team gold medallist Laura Collett from a shortlist of contenders.

“Jessica’s story really stood out to me — not just because of her results, but because of the partnership she’s built with Murphy,” said Laura.

“It’s clear how much love and hard work has gone into their journey.

“To be riding a homebred horse with such an incredible history, and to already be jumping double clear at your first two-star at just 14, is impressive.

“Jessica shows real dedication, riding before and after school, and it’s clear she’s making the most of every opportunity,” continued Laura.

“She’s a brilliant example of what this sport is all about — partnership, passion, and perseverance.”
