The horse, Bonnie, found herself trapped in the deep ditch amid three feet of cold water, in Church Lane, Billericay. The water came almost up to the withers of her soaked-through rug.

Bonnie was sedated by a vet and firefighters used lines and strops to pull her up the bank to safety. She was back on her feet and left in the care of her owner by 3pm.

“Great team work today for a difficult rescue,” said a spokesman for Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, when they shared the positive outcome on social media.
