At Bransby Horses, we believe that every equine — no matter their age or past — deserves a life filled with love, care, and purpose.
As one of the UK’s largest equine welfare charities, we see many older horses and ponies arrive at our site in desperate need of help. One such horse was Ginger, a 12-year-old black and white cob who arrived in heartbreaking condition but left with a future full of hope.
Ginger came into our care in March 2024, after we were contacted by the RSPCA for assistance with a case involving horses in poor condition.
Working alongside the RSPCA, police, and a vet, we helped remove two equines under Section 4 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006.
One of them was Ginger.
Critically low body weight
She was severely underweight with a body condition score of just 0.5 — critically low.
Her coat was dull and scurfy, and she was suffering from significant dental issues. The latter required immediate attention and tooth extraction.
Despite her condition, Ginger remained gentle and sweet-natured, instantly capturing the hearts of the team of people caring for her.
With expert veterinary care, gentle handling, and tailored training, Ginger began to recover.
She gained weight, confidence, and strength.
Her kind and affectionate temperament shone through. She loved her grooming sessions that so much that she would often fall asleep mid-pamper.
It was clear she was ready for the next step.
A second chance
At Bransby Horses, age is never a barrier to rehoming.

We believe that every equine deserves a chance to thrive in a home where they are loved and understood.
Ginger found hers with a fosterer who had recently lost her beloved horse and was looking for a new equine companion.
After meeting Ginger and learning her story, there was an instant connection.
Not only did Ginger remind her of her previous horse, but she also felt deeply moved by Ginger’s resilience and wanted to give her the loving home she deserved.
Today, Ginger lives on a livery yard, enjoying gentle walks, grooming sessions, and plenty of grazing time.
Her fosterer completely adores her and says it truly is the perfect match.
Ginger now has the life every horse deserves — calm, cared for, and full of companionship.
A welfare priority
Ginger’s story also reflects an important message: older horses have so much to give.
At Bransby Horses, promoting the welfare of aged equines is a key focus this year.
As horses age, their needs change, and owners must be ready to adapt to meet them.
Dental care, joint health, appropriate diet, and regular veterinary checks are essential to ensure older horses remain comfortable and content.
Sadly, some horses are neglected as they age, seen as less ‘useful’ or too expensive to manage.
But with the right care and a bit of love, older equines like Ginger can live long, happy, and fulfilling lives.
