SPILLERS has donated £5,000 of strip grazing equipment to horse welfare charity, Redwings Horse Sanctuary, to help them manage their residents’ weight.

The charity has partnered with the feed manufacturer on their ‘Battle of the Bulge’ campaign which aims to end equine obesity by 2035.

SPILLERS has been spreading awareness and empowering owners through its Slimmers’ Club Facebook group which provides practical support and camaraderie for owners of overweight horses and ponies on their weight loss journey.

“Earlier this year we asked members to vote on how they would like us to spend £5,000 to help provide support for overweight residents at Redwings,” said Bella Fricker, project lead at Mars Horsecare, home of the SPILLERS brand.

“The provision of strip grazing supplies was chosen as the winning project and we were delighted to donate strip grazing equipment to the value of £5,000 to help the Redwings team manage their weight watchers.”

An effective way

SPILLERS were part of a study which found that strip grazing can be an effective way of restricting grass intake to help manage the weight of horses and ponies. Follow up research discovered that strip grazing may be an effective weight management tool because it ensures consistent nutrient intake.

“We are so grateful to SPILLERS and everyone who has been involved in the Battle of the Bulge campaign for this donation. It will enable us to make a real difference to the horses and ponies in Redwings’ care,” said Amy Honey, the weight management coordinator at Redwings Horse Sanctuary.

“Weight management is such an important issue that has big welfare implications for horses, whether they be in Sanctuary care or privately owned, and we’re so happy to be working with SPILLERS on raising awareness, and for their support in helping us to tackle it amongst our herds.”

“Strip grazing is a really important management tool for us at Redwings, allowing the teams to continually adjust the amount of grazing available according to the condition of the horses and ponies.”
