A rider has died after falling off her horse while out hacking near Bullerthorpe Lane in Newsam Green, Leeds at the weekend, West Yorkshire Police have confirmed.
The woman, in her 60s, was taken to hospital in a critical condition and died on Sunday evening.
The police also confirmed that a dog had been near the horse shortly before the incident occurred. The dog’s owner remained at the scene.
The rider’s loose horse ran off following the fall but was later found uninjured.
Police officers from Leeds District CID are investigating.
“This was a tragic incident where a woman has sadly lost her life, and our thoughts remain with her family who are being supported by specialist officers,” said senior investigating officer superintendent Emma Winfield.
“We are currently working to establish the events leading up to the incident. I would ask anyone with any information to please come forward.”

A statement from West Yorkshire Police, which was sent to Your Horse, said:
Shortly after 10am yesterday morning, police were called by the ambulance service to a report that a woman had been injured after falling from a horse near Bullerthorpe Lane, Newsam Green, Leeds.
Officers attended and the woman, aged in her 60s, was taken to hospital in a critical condition but sadly died yesterday evening.
It was reported that shortly before the incident, a dog had been present near to the horse. The owner of the dog remained on the scene.
The horse ran away but was located safe and uninjured a short time later.
Officers from Leeds District CID are working to establish the circumstances of what happened, and the investigation remains in its early stages.
