Clare Barfoot BSC (Hons) Rutr, and equine nutrition expert at Spillers answers why many horse feeds contain Wheatfeed:
Wheatfeed is a by-product of flour milling, comprising of wheat bran, endosperm and other starch screenings. It’s a very useful ingredient in horse feed as it’s relatively high in fibre and is often used in low to medium energy feeds to provide, fibre, energy and protein.
Some horse owners are concerned about the use of wheatfeed, but just because it’s not used in human food doesn’t mean it’s not extremely useful in horse feed. Sugar beet is also a by-product of human food production after the sugar has been extracted from the beet. Traditionally animal feed has often used products from human food production as this is both environmentally friendly and efficient.
