As a responsible owner, you care about your horse’s health and the environment they live in — and the Equine Health Plan provides preventative healthcare while promoting sustainable practices that help protect the planet.

The Plan focuses on preventative care such as vaccinations, dental treatment and parasite control. Members also receive discounts on selected diagnostic tests, visit fees and long-term medications.

Unlike traditional insurance, which covers accidents and illness, the Equine Health Plan focuses on prevention and makes managing your horse’s routine care easier. With reminders and pre-arranged visits where possible, you can focus on enjoying time with your horse without worrying about scheduling appointments.

A convenient monthly payment spreads the cost of preventative healthcare across 12 months rather than facing large, unexpected bills. The plan renews automatically each year to ensure continuous care.

Testing before worming

Worms pose a significant risk to equine health, but routine worming is no longer considered the best approach.

Resistance to wormers is increasing, and these treatments can be highly toxic to beneficial invertebrates, such as dung beetles, which play a crucial role in maintaining soil health.

Historically, wormers were given at regular intervals throughout the year to prevent disease caused by worm burdens. However, increasing evidence of resistance to wormers on the market, meaning a risk-based, diagnostic-led worming programme is now recommended.

The Equine Health Plan prioritises testing first and treating only when necessary. This evidence-based approach reduces the overuse of wormers, helping to preserve their effectiveness while protecting the wider environment.
