A grey gelding who spent 14 years working as a police horse for Greater Manchester Police has retired from active duty and begun a new life with his vet.

Hexam had been treated by Simon Constables from Simon Constables Equine Vets for a number of years and when the time came for the 18-year-old to stand down from service, Simon and his wife Emily jumped at the chance to rehome him.

“We feel very privileged to have Hexam in our stables following his retirement after 14 years at GMP Mounted Division,” said Simon.

“If only he could talk, I’m sure he’d have some amazing stories of his time on the beat.”

Award winner

Hexam started his career with Greater Manchester Police as a four-year-old and soon transformed from a nervous and timid youngster to a reliable and calm presence. He worked at football matches, Pride celebrations and ceremonial events, and also visited schools.

In 2016, Hexam was one of three horses to be crowned Public Service Animal of the Year at the Animal Hero Awards after they braved fireworks and smoke bombs to prevent violence at a football match.

In the last few years before his retirement, Hexam became a mentor to new recruits, showing them how it’s done and helping them find their feet.

‘A very special horse’

“He now has a more sedate life being the lead hacking horse for our young children’s ponies at weekends. I’m sure he’ll have lots more stories to add to his collection,” said Simon.

“Hexam is, for sure, a very special horse who will be treasured with us, whatever role he has here.”
