Ireland’s Elizabeth Power riding Doonaveeragh O One took the winning title with the fastest clear round in the Amlin Plus Eventers’ Challenge at the Longines Royal International Horse Show.
Ex-eventer Doonaveeragh O One, who’s stable name is ‘Tommy’, is no stranger to doing well in this type of class or even Hickstead, as in 2012 as he came third with Esib’s brother Robert, in the Amlin Plus Eventing Grand Prix. They followed this two years later by winning the Bunn Leisure Speed Derby, and had a good shot at the Equestrian.com Derby a year later.
It wasn’t till last summer, that Esib took back the ride on Doonaveeragh O One in the first Amlin Plus Eventers’ Challenge, where they finished second behind Andrew Nicholson. Since then, they have produced a great round in the Equestrian.com Derby finishing tenth, before returning to Hickstead to pick up their first Eventers’ Challenge winner’s sash.
“He's amazing – he hasn't jumped a cross-country fence since he was here last year. He can jump big fences for fun and he’s the bravest horse I've ever sat on – I'd ride down to a house on him,” said Esib.
Second place in the Amlin Plus Eventers' Challenge went to New Zealand’s Tim Price, who produced the fastest round of the day on The Precious One, but a pole down added four seconds to his time and lost him the title. The top British rider was Laura Collett riding Mr Bass who finished third.
