Your Horse reviews the Lemieux Carbon cooler rug

This smart rug fits perfectly and is true to size, the quick clip chest fastening makes putting this rug on quick and easy. It’s been used mainly as a travel rug and has stood up the job really well.

It’s a lightweight rug that does a really good job at keep your horse at a comfortable temperature. The top section of the rug, which sits over the key muscle groups is slightly thicker yet still cools and dries effectively while maintaining a level of warmth too.

The material is soft enough that it moulds to the shape of your horse’s body so it can wick moisture away from you horse after washing down.

For a little under £50 – can't really fault the price and considering how well it does the job it’s become a really useful addition to my horse’s wardrobe and would highly recommend it.

Your Horse reviews the Rambo Supreme Dry rug

Reviewed by: Allison Lowther

HW Dry rug.JPG

Used for: 9 months

This lightweight rug is made from a soft brushed polyester material and it does everything Horseware claim, it dries your horse quickly by wicking and absorbing moisture away from his coat. Once dry your horse’s coat feels smooth and looks really shiny too.

The rug fits well and is true to size – lengthwise, it's not the deepest but it moulds to the contours of your horse's body. For this rug to do an effective job it does need to be close fitting, so the surcingles are elasticated to ensure your horse stays comfortable.

The neck cover is a good length and depth and the ability to fold the neck cover away is a good addition too.

After using, this rug dries quickly when hung up on a rug rack, or on a fence in the sun.

If you’re looking for a smart, practical rug that will dry your horse off efficiently I’d highly recommend this rug – I really quite like the bright blue colour too.

Really can’t fault this rug, may not be the cheapest, but having used it through the winter and into the summer months you can use it all year round.

Protechmasta rug review

Protechmasta rug.jpg

Used by: Your Horse associate editor Allison Lowther

Used for: nine months

I’ve been using this rug on one of my horses for some time now. Initially, through the summer it was used mainly as a travel rug. To be fair, I didn’t see huge results to begin with. However, over the winter, my horse has been wearing this rug on a daily basis as an under rug when she’s been in her stable and for travelling.

Since using it on a more regular basis I’ve seen some really positve effects.

The horse I’ve been using it on can get quite anxious and stressed – this is heightened when she realises she’s going out in the lorry.

Now for the techy bit – a special ceramic powder is blended with the yarns of the lining fabric of this rug, which provides long lasting properties that won’t wash out. The Far Infra-Red technology works by gently increasing blood flow bringing oxygen and nutrients to muscles and promotes a faster removal of toxins leading to a more energised yet relaxed horse.

I have to say, my horse has been more relaxed since wearing this rug regularly. She’s recently had to spend a bit more time in than both of us would like due to my field being water-logged. Despite this, she seemed happier to stay in and hasn’t walked round her stable so much.

Wearing it for travelling and before lessons, she warms up quicker and has been producing much more consistent work, with increased suppleness and relaxation too.

The rug fits really nicely – it’s cut generously and fits well in front of the wither too - which I like. It’s lightweight and the mesh type fabric ensures my horse stays at a comfortable temperature in it.

It’s been washed several times and still shows no signs of wear.

This is a versatile rug, which for me has had a positive effect on my horse and I’ll continue to use it.

ThermoMaster Turin review

RRP £79.90

This rug fits really well length-wise, but isn’t as deep as other rugs.

The detachable neck cover is a verasatlie addition, but it does come up a bit short and flapped over when the horse is grazing exposing the bottom of their neck and in the rain this would get wet.

The 50g filling keeps the horse warm and the chest padding provides some additional comfort. However, 600 denier outer hasn’t proved to be very durable and has a few tears in it.

This rug is fair value, but only if your horse isn’t very tough on his rugs.

Bucas Irish turnout review

RRP £99

For stockists visit

This rug fits perfectly, it’s a great shape around the neck and shoulders and after a few days of use it moulds to your horse’s shape. The silky lining has produced a great shine on the horse’s coat and cut down on grooming time too.

It’s proved to be tough and waterproof, although the tail flap could be more generous to provide the hindquarters with more protection from the rain. The 50g filling is just enough to provide a little additonal warmth, but without the worry of your horse over-heating.

Can’t fault this rug on fit and performance, but it is pricey and if you want a rug with a neck cover you need to buy this seperately.

A well-fitting rug with 100g filling, which is a great option on those cool days.

This rug is very well designed and looks really smart.

This rug has a 600 denier outer with reinforced 1200 denier ripstop sections just where you need them to make this rug durable.

The clever articulated full neck is shaped so prevents mane being rubbed out, this definitely gets a thumbs up!

All-in-all a great rug that’s performed really well.

This high-tech rug from Masta enhances the natural Far Infra-Red waves (FIR waves) in the body to help your horse feel more relaxed and energised.

There are hundreds of threads in the rug combined with ceramic powders that generate the FIR waves. The waves are absorbed by water molecules in the body which then start to vibrate, creating a gentle heating effect.

This increases the core and muscle temperature, enhancing circulation which can help to ease tired, tense or stiff muscles.

The Protechmasta rug can be worn on its own and is great choice for travelling your horse in. It'is made of an air mesh fabric that's lightweight and absorbent to help wick moisture away to the top of the rug.

Rambo Supreme with Vari Layer

Rambo Vari Layer

Reviewed by event rider, Julia Dungworth

Used for five months

This is the daddy of all the rugs, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. It fits beautifully and never moves an inch. It’s also a good depth offering protection to the tummy area from the elements. My horse stayed dry through the heaviest rain and the varying amount of filling (250g over the back and 100g down the sides) in the rug made it easy to handle, but the horse remained at a comfortable temperature. The 1000 denier ballistic nylon feels tough and has stood up really well to constant use over the winter months.

It’s very simple to use buckle wise, the neck cover is a good length and depth. Also, the plastic covered fillet string is a great idea – much easier to keep clean! The colour combination of black with silver binding make the rug look really smart.

Think of this rug as an investment – you won’t be disappointed.

Among others, the outside humidity and thickness of your horse’s hairs are two important factors for determining his comfort zone. Thermatex SHR multi purpose rug

Thermatex multi purpose rug

Used by: YH associate editor Ally Lowther

Used for: 7 years

Such a smart looking rug and definitely one to save for best. It fits beautifully, but sizing is generous, so I'd suggest  going down a size to get the best possible fit. Both of my horses have one of these coolers which I tend to use more during the cooler months as they're heavier than other coolers. The three layer fabric moulds to your horse’s shape and moisture is effectively wicked away from your horse to the top of the rug.

This rug is available in lots of different colours with a choice of bindings too. It’s heavier than other coolers, but it’s ideal for cooler days. There is one drawback and I’d recommend not leaving your horse wearing this rug in his stable – everything sticks to it! It maybe expensive, but this rug does a great job and will last for years.

Both rugs have been regularly washed and although the older one of the two (I've had this one for approximately 7 years) is still in good condition, the outer material is a little bobbly I'm sure there's a few more years left in them yet.
