A North Lincolnshire entrepreneur has been able to launch an Equine Therapy and Rehabilitation business thanks to a Kickstart funding boost.

The funding, from the UK Steel Enterprise (UKSE) Kickstart fund, has enabled North Lincolnshire-based Donna Barker to fulfil a life-long ambition of establishing an equine therapy and rehabilitation business after receiving funding

Business owner Donna is a qualified and insured Equine Sports and Remedial Massage Practitioner, dedicated to improving the life and welfare of horses. She established Donna Barker Equine Therapy and Rehabilitation in December 2016 to provide an increasingly popular and in demand service.

Specialising in providing a combination of effective therapies for optimum equine health and performance, the £500 funding boost has allowed the company to invest in branded marketing collateral and clothing, alongside materials for use in future training days held for horse owners.

The company, based in Broughton, now works with a growing customer base in and around North Lincolnshire, also plans to increase the profile of the business by sponsoring local riders.

Entrepreneur Donna, an experienced Equine Sports and Remedial Practitioner and Practitioner of Equine Shiatsu, said; “The last few months have been amazing; the funding that I have received has allowed me to purchase marketing collateral - vital to getting my brand noticed.

“Through this I have been able to increase my client scope massively; prospective and potential clients now hear about the company, which is increasingly important in the ever-competitive world of business.

“Now, I have a well-established customer base which is growing by the day, and I’m delighted to be delivering a range of equine services to a whole myriad of clients. This increase in clients has also led me to take on the position of Independent Sales Agent for The Pure Feed Company, promoting and selling their product.

“None of this would have been possible at such pace without the support from UK Steel Enterprise and the Kickstart fund. That initial £500 injection has made the world of difference, so thank you UK Steel!”

UKSE is part of Tata Steel and invests up to £1m in growing companies, particularly those creating jobs.

Launched in February 2016 the UKSE Kickstart Fund is aimed at smaller start-up businesses.  Working in partnership with North Lincolnshire Council and the Growth Hub, the Kickstart Fund supports those looking to establish a business in the area, providing grants of between £500 and £1,000.

Applicants also receive help and advice from local Growth Hub advisors and the Economic Development team at North Lincolnshire Council.

Keith Williams of UK Steel Enterprise, said: “Donna Barker Equine Therapy and Rehabilitation is a great example of what can be achieve by ambitious and passionate entrepreneurs who are looking to utilise their existing skills to set up a new business.

“We’re very much looking forward to following the journey of the company as it continues to grow in the coming months.”
