Are you heading to the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials this weekend? If you are, be sure to check out the Musto Mare - a horse simulator where you can experience the Burghley cross-country course for yourself.

William Fox-Pitt has a go on the Musto Mare

Here at Your Horse, we had a go this morning and, while we didn’t quite make the optimum time, we had a few perfect jumps and got to experience how it feels to go over those famous four-star fences.

Joining us as part of the experience was none other than Musto-sponsored rider, William Fox-Pitt. You can see how he got on in the short video below. At one point he was riding one-handed (well he is a pro after all).

The Musto Mare can walk, trot, canter, gallop and jump and you have to be precise with your aids to make sure she goes where you ask. While riding the mare, you’ll have three screens in front of you that show you your balance and pressure on the reins, giving you a great lesson in accuracy!

The computer screens also show you the route to take around Burghley - this is where the fun starts!

Before you panic, there’s a short introduction where you’re giving a lesson so you know how to ride the simulator, as well as having a few practice jumps in a warm-up ring. Once you’ve got the feel of things (and can work out how to stop!), it’s time to hit the cross-country.

You’ll canter round out of the saddle, following a gravel track that takes you over a series of combinations and famous fences from the four-star event, including the Dairy Mound.

There are skinnies, oxers, tight turns and ditches, so be prepared for a bit of a challenge!
