Redwings Oxhill in Banbury – otherwise known as the ‘Land of the Giants’ – will be hosting a special birthday party for its biggest giant of all this May, and you’re invited!

Stunning Shire Percheron cross, Major, is the tallest horse in Redwings Horse Sanctuary’s care, standing at an impressive 17.3hh – that equates to a height of 175cm just to his shoulders.

This gentle giant shares his home at Redwings Oxhill, south of Stratford-upon-Avon, with several other heavy horses – as well as over 80 other horses and donkeys at the visitor centre – and has been a popular member of the charity’s Adoption Scheme since 2013.

Mighty Major came to Redwings five years ago when the rare breeds country park where he lived was forced to close.

Due to the special care requirements of heavy horses, Major was welcomed into the Sanctuary where his clear love of people soon led to him becoming a hugely popular Adoption Star.

Everyone is invited to join Major in celebrating his ninth birthday with a party at Redwings Oxhill, south of Stratford-upon-Avon, on Sunday 28th May, starting at 11.30am.

On the big day, visitors will have the chance to enjoy cuddles with Major, join in a quiz trail and party games, and watch him tuck into his very own birthday cake!

Supporters can also sponsor Major for £12.50 a year, with funds going towards his daily care and that of his friends.

Anyone who sponsors one of Redwings’ 24 Adoption Stars can visit them for free at the centre where they live and receive updates on their four-legged friend’s progress.

They’re even invited to celebrate their Adoption Star’s birthday with a party every year, and Major is no exception!

Gemma Walpole, Redwings’ Head of Fundraising, said: “With our largest group of heavy horses, it’s no wonder our Warwickshire visitor centre has earned the nickname ‘Land of the Giants’!

"Don’t be fooled by his size – Major is a real softy who loves nothing more than bowing his head over his fence for a cuddle and a lovely scratch behind the ears. We hope as many people as possible will come along to his birthday party and take the chance to meet this gorgeous gentle giant for themselves.”
