Following Nick Skelton’s performance in Rio, it seems Britain is on a roll when it comes to individual show jumping gold medals, as Jack Whitaker has now achieved the top spot at the Pony European Championships in Denmark.
Before the two individual rounds Jack lay in equal fourth on Elando Van De Roshoeve with seven others on four faults. Ahead of him lay two riders on zero and one on a single time fault, but they had to maintain that high standard to remain in contention for the medals.
However, Jack soon eased up the leader board as the other riders picked up faults and when he produced another copybook round on the 12-year-old Elando Van De Roshoeve this shot him to first place.
“It was unbelievable. I could feel how well my pony was going all week and he just felt different to usual. He’s usually very, very good, but throughout the week he was just feeling exceptional; it was as if he knew it was a championships” said Jack.
