Très Health fitness trainer James puts Jay through his paces

If you've found your way here that means you're keen to track international show jumper and Très Health’s equestrian ambassador Jay Halim's progress as he works hard to improve his rider fitness.

In this blog Jay continues his physio treatments, gets gym fit and has his food diary analysed.

“My next visit to the clinic was a session with Narveen, the one of the clinic’s other physiotherapists for a follow on session. Très have recommended two physio sessions a week to get on top of my aches, pains and tightness and I have to say it is really working for me and I’m noticing the positive difference already in my everyday riding.

"We’ve been doing a physio session prior to a gym session each time and the difference is incredible! My gym sessions with James are becoming more progressive and we are now working on co-ordination and strengthening exercises. One of the exercises, which really isolates your glutes and improves balance, is standing on a block and bringing your leg back (as if kicking out) and squat down on one leg then cross your leg over behind you and then slowly stand up.

"Boy, does that test your stability and work your muscles!! What I am loving about my gym sessions with James is that you don’t need to be in a gym to do many of these exercises so with an exercise ball or using my own body weight I can do many of the exercises at home or away at shows to keep riding fit on the road. I had been really upping my game at the gym prior to Très, but James has really shown me that smashing it at the gym isn’t all heavy weights and straining my muscles. It’s about working them in the right way and in the right sequence.

"We have also been working on cardio and doing circuit training, which I have to confess has been a killer! I nearly gave up quite a few times, but James kept my enthusiasm going!

I also had a review of my food diary with nutritionist Simone (the first of my food entries didn’t go too well as my last blog confessed!) but since then I have really improved my diet. I have always eaten fairly well, but keeping a diary has helped me see the gaps. Simone told me to see each plate as a pie chart and look at my fat, protein and carbs intake.

"Despite being a vegetarian I was really shocked to see that my intake of veg and fruit is actually quite low, so I am working hard to improve that and also to drink more water. I even take a two litre bottle of water to the yard each day now!

"My time in the saddle is also becoming easier and altogether I am finding myself sitting up taller and feeling stronger. I have always had a good position but was finding myself forcing my shoulders back, which was making me ride with tension. Now, I can sit tall, shoulders back with ease and my energy levels have really improved,  making riding eight horses a day a pleasure... well, that is, if it’s not raining and the sun is shining!"

blog 2: RAMPING UP MY QUEST FOR FITNESS & IN-THE-SADDLE SUCCESS!

Jay Halim has been making regular trips to London in a quest to ramp up his fitness for riding

Jay Halim has been making regular trips to London in a quest to ramp up his fitness for riding

We track top international show-jumper and Très Health’s equestrian ambassador Jay Halim from his initial assessment right through his programme with the clinic.

In this blog, Jay continues his quest for better fitness in the saddle with some great results

“I’ve had a few more physio sessions since my last blog and one of them focused on an alternative physio treatment on my feet with Tina! I’ve had an ongoing problem with my left foot and Tina worked on my feet for a whole session and the results have been fantastic. I cannot tell you how well I am feeling! I’ve been working on building up my cardio rate up and wearing a heart monitor with James so that we can find out where my heart rate sits comfortably and find out what increases it in order to get fitter. James did comment that my fitness wasn’t too bad but as ever, room for improvement! So we have been working on a sequence of sprinting on bike, kettle bell swings and then Burpies (look them up on the internet and you will see what kind of pain I am in!).

"Even just going through one set was exhausting and I did feel like giving up, but James egged me on and I know that I have to push on and get on!

"In between my sessions at Très, I have been competiting and I am chuffed to say that we have had a number of high profile wins under our belt. I am attributing a lot of this to my renewed fitness, improved core strength and mental focus, all of which are being helped by the team at Très and as we move forward, it’s great to see the changes the team have made to my performance in the saddle and, as the competition season is just hotting up, I’m Jay ‘Tiger’ Halim and ready for anything!”

blog 3: THIS IS NOT THE END. IT’S JUST THE START!

Jay reflects on his time with the team and the positive effect it’s having on his life in and out of the saddle.

“I’ve been working with three physios at Très (rotating them throughout my programme) and they each bring something unique and different to the sessions. In the last couple Narveen has been treated my little aches, pains and niggles, as my body adjusts to a new and improved alignment. I’ve been getting a bit of knee pain recently which we have been working on but, because I have such a physical job, I can’t down tools and rest up, so Narveen suggested strapping it up. I didn’t realise this meant shaving my knees so now I have a rather fetching look on my legs and a debate as to whether I leave it to grow back or shave the rest of my legs. Either way, I won’t be wearing shorts out in public anytime soon!

To help with his knee pain, Jay's Très physio Narveen suggested strapping them up - little did he know this meant shaving his knees!

"James Farmer has been pushing my limits in the gym work and looking at my all over body strength and I feel so much stronger in my core and my posture is noticeably more upright. The time spent with James has made me realise how much I had been pushing myself in the gym pre-Très, but not achieving very much, highlighting how valuable a good personal trainer is.

"I’ve had plenty of time for reflection on my train journeys down to London and also becoming more body aware too. As a result I’ve noticed that I am feeling a bit worn out , so Simone, the nutritional therapist, recommended that I go to my GP and get a blood test. She was right – I am lacking in Vitamin B12, so I have an appointment booked in for some vitamin injections to resolve this – great advice Simone. Thanks!

"In the past when I felt tired I would have just pushed through, eating a quick sugary fix or gulped down a coffee and then headed to the gym, then pushed my body through that and ended up feeling even more tired and probably just repeated it over and over again! My time with the team is making me realise how important every aspect of your health is, from the mental coaching, the physio, the core strength training and nutrition – they all work in close synergy and everything I am learning from them, I am taking on board and actioning.

"I am now drinking more water, balancing my food better and living the new lifestyle with ease. With the competition season hotting up now, its not possible for me to return to my old four-times-a-week gym sessions. I don’t need to anymore. With the programme James is developing with me, my gym time spent is down to three times a week and the difference is huge. I admit I thought I was pretty well educated about health, diet and lifestyle but actually the guys are teaching me so much more and I really do feel better than I have ever felt before. I’m looking forward to seeing this continue and translate on to my competitive results as it has done so far – watch out (show jumping) world…I’m coming at ya!”
