To compete online in dressage all you need is a camera!

  1. Consider investing in a tripod to steady the camera. Otherwise, ask whoever’s filming to keep the camera in front of them and turn their upper body to follow the horse.
  2. Ask the person who’s filming to stand behind C to try and keep you and your horse as large as possible in the frame especially at the far end of the arena.
  3. Try to keep the sun behind the camera.
  4. If riding in show clothes, put bandages or boots on the horse to prove that the test has not been pre-judged.
  5. On a dark, gloomy day wear light clothing and try to avoid riding against a dark background. If this can’t be avoided put white bandages and a white saddle pad on your horse.
  6. Prepare thoroughly to ensure you’re familiar with the moves.
  7. Don’t forget the test starts as soon as you enter the arena, so ride confidently and smile at ‘the judge’ ie the camera.
  8. Read the rules for the online competition you’re entering before you ride.
  9. Late entries will be refused, so check entry dates and send off in good time.
  10. Some people tense up as soon as a video is pointed at them, which can transfer to the horse. Relax and have fun – you can always film it again!
