I used to use a treeless saddle as I was told it was better for my horse as it let them have free movement through their back. Although I found it comfortable and did do an endurance ride in it, my horse didn’t like it. He became stroppy when it came to tacking up time and constantly tried to kick and bite me. So I swiftly changed back to my old treed saddle where he stopped being stroppy and I could safely tack him up. Recently I have bought him a new saddle that has been fitted to his shape and we and both extremely comfortable in it!! So my advice to others is that although treeless saddles seem to be in fashion, treed saddles are best for some horses! And when your horse becomes grumpy when tacking up you must get him checked by the vet as soon as you can. I had to give my horse a month’s box rest due to an ill-fitting saddle and we have to slowly build up his workload which is no fun as we can’t enjoy a good gallop through our woods!

RE: Treeless Saddles
Hi, for 4 years I used an ALbion GP on my pony, from backing to now 8 years of age. In february I purchased a treeless saddle after trialing. Within 18 days she was exhibiting saddle sores where my seat bones were located, the saddle itself was dented from my seat bones (my heather moffatt seat saver has not done that in teh 5 years I have had it, and as yet even with repeated phone calls and emails, I have yet to be visited by the original saddle fitter. 10 weeks later I am now requesting a full refund and costs which have included vets bills and loss of use and am fully expecting to have to persue this through the courts. Will I ever go treeless again....never!
