Jack's Story

Hello, thought I'd tell Jack's story of the last 15 months, as I have to rehabilitate him through a serious injury, that many advised me not to do. In October 2006 I was jumping him and he pulled up lame all of a sudden. We rested him and called the vet. After much poking, prodding, and rest later it was decided he had twisted on landing and sprained his fetlock. However, 6 weeks later, he went lame again. Spoke to the vet, same treatment - maybe it was bruising.

Back into work and 6 weeks later, lame again. This continued a few more times, until in January we decided to take him to the vets and investigate. He was taken up for the day, trotted up, nerve blocked, lunged, prodded, shoes removed etc. Lameness was definite in the near fore, below the fetlock - basically the hoof. They wanted to do some scans of his foot. So the insurance company was involved and scans booked.

While the vets and insurance company were talking I had to keep the poor thing lame. It nearly broke my heart riding him. I knew it hurt, but I just did a little bit to keep him 2/10ths lame. Then in February 2007 we got the date for the scan. 18th. We boxed him up, took him to the vet and there I left him.

They started the scans at 4pm. They finished at 7pm that day and started again at 9am the next day. By midday they were done. But still no news of what it was. But it was the start of the box rest. Two days later I got a call. "We've looked at the scans, and there are some abnormalities with the pedal bone." My heart sank. "It's fractured." I cried. "In both front feet we think." I was numb.
