Despite an error in her dressage test Mary King still managed to take the top spot on day one of The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials.

Riding Apache Sauce Mary missed part of the final canter work and, on arriving at halt, had to be interrupted by Ground Jury member Marilyn Payne.

“I haven’t done that for years,” Mary said afterwards, confessing to having a ‘blonde moment’.

Mary has been riding at Burghley for more than 20 years winning in 1996 on Star Appeal and this year she wasn’t alone in her first day blunder.

William Fox-Pitt was penalised for entering the arena more than 45 seconds after the bell had rung.

“I had got myself into a position where I couldn’t see the clock. I’ve never done that one before!” said William.

The five-time winner of Burghley was second place on day one on Argentine Thoroughbred Macchiato.
