Simon Laurens, one of the UK’s top para dressage riders has won a silver medal in Freestyle Dressage and a Team Gold at the 2008 Paralympics.
"The Atmosphere here is electric," says Simon. "I can’t believe I have two medals and Team GB has 10. Thanks to all who have supported me."
Earlier in the week, Simon’s horse, Ocean Diamond, failed to find form in the Grade III test and could only manage 62.88% to leave him in eighth place. But everything turned around in the Freestyle when Simon, who performed his test in the morning session of his competition, joined the medal party by adding silver to the overall tally with a Latin-inspired performance to a Ricky Martin soundtrack.
“At last! I am over the moon,” said Simon, who clinched his medal with a
score of 73.5%. “That’s much more like Ocean Diamond. I’m pleased for
the horse and myself."
For Simon, being shortlisted for the 2008 Paralympics was an achievement that just three years ago he would never have thought possible. In 2004, Simon’s future as a dressage rider was in tatters after being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and his initial reaction was to quit. But the encouragement of friends and one very special horse – Ocean Dream - persuaded Simon to continue to compete. When he saw the standards of Para dressage riders his interest grew and, after being assessed as a Grade III Para rider in November 2005, he went on to win all four Para trials he contested with Ocean Dream.
Going to the Paralympics this year has been Simon’s greatest challenge yet and now he has the London Paralympics 2012 in his sights.
Simon’s MS means that he has problems with his core stability and balance. Frequent muscle spasms, particularly in his legs, mean he needs a horse with a suitable temperament.
Simon explains, “To be competitive, we cannot expect Para riders to make do with horses past their best in able-bodied dressage. Investment is needed now to buy and train young horses ready for 2012.”
Investment is also needed to keep riders like Simon competing in the sport. In the UK there are around 150 Para riders, some who have been disabled from birth and others who have faced a major disease or disability later in life. In order for them to continue to inspire and motivate others to join the sport, sponsorship is required. Simon is actively looking for all levels of sponsorship.
