An imaginative young artist is being given the opportunity to see one of their drawings brought to life in front of thousands of spectators by winning the chance to theme a Goodyear fence at one of the sport’s most celebrated occasions.

For the second year running, the search is on to find budding designers to dress a cross-country jump, with the best one being developed by Gatcombe’s official course designer Captain Mark Phillips and incorporated in the course at this summer’s Festival of Eventing.

The deadline for entries is June 6, 2008, when designs will be posted onto the Goodyear website and a winner will be selected by the expert panel. There will be three age categories for the competition – all winners will receive framed prints of their drawing signed by Captain Mark Phillips, while the overall winner will receive tickets for a family of 4 to see their fence showcased at Gatcombe on Sunday August 3, 2008.

Last year saw Goodyear’s template fence enhanced by the winner’s 'Tyre Triple' design, and the talented entrant was presented with a framed photo of their winning design.

This year it will be British Open competitors tackling the fence and Goodyear’s Ben Crawley believes the prize offers a great way for people to showcase their skills.

He said: “The partnership with British Eventing has enabled us to help support ongoing developments to understand and minimise accidents at horse trials. We will use the fence to showcase the safety work we are doing, and thought it would be great if the look of that obstacle was decided by a young designer.

“There is a template to work from on our website and each fence has to meet strict safety criteria so we are looking for a themed concept rather than a final fence design, as the theme will need to be modified and revised to pass the guidelines set out.”
