The Horse Refuge – home to 45 horses including Europe’s tallest horse Duke – is still set to close at the end of April unless it can raise enough cash to buy land.
Those involved with the refuge say this would mean some, if not all, the animals being destroyed.
Supporters are seeking to raise £600,000 to buy the land it is on – which is otherwise up for sale with an eviction notice already issued for the end of April.
Despite a lot of publicity around the refuge's plight, it is still behind its fundraising target. It's even struggling to feed the horses and other animals who currently live there.
Refuge assistant Alison Jones said: “I am just a helper here but I have had to pay out £140 on hay just to stop the horses from starving.
“We desperately need even a little bit of money so we can feed them till the end of the month.
“We also want to find cash to pay for transport if we do find anywhere to move the horses.”
The Refuge is run by Sara Ross who used to work at the House of Commons. She is holding a fund-raising event there tomorrow night (March 24), in the hope of attracting additional funds.
