The Longines Royal International Horse Show, certainly the oldest in Europe, enjoys the reputation of being among the biggest and best when it comes to thrills and entertainment. And now you have the chance to win a fabulous prize of members' tickets for all five days plus a behind the scenes tour with the presenters and team from Sky Sports tv.
This year, the first of the Royal International's second century, the show gets a new look and offers even more excitement:
• The Longines King George V Gold Cup opens its ranks to lady riders for the first time since it was presented in 1911
• The Old Lodge Queen Elizabeth II Cup, offered for competition in 1947 by the then Princess Elizabeth, this year includes male riders for the first time in its history, giving a new group of riders their chance to compete in Hickstead’s world-ranked International Arena.
• The British showjumping team, with perhaps riders shortly to travel to Hong Kong for the Olympic Games, will be hell-bent on avenging last year’s second place to the US team in the eight-nation Samsung Super League with FEI Competition (Great Britain).
• Mountain and Moorland ponies will for the first time be contesting the supreme ridden pony championship.
• The annual showjumpers v event riders head to head, the Ford Ranger Eventing Grand Prix, which last year celebrated its tenth anniversary, introduces some new-look obstacles both inside the arena and out on the cross-country section.
Six arenas will be in use on all five days of the show, which opens on July 23, to accommodate more than 150 classes for upwards of 2,750 horses. There is also first class shopping in the extensive trade stand village, which this year boasts a record 200 stands sited around the International Arena.
The Longines Royal International Horse Show is not only famous for its showjumping - showing classes attract about 1,600 of the country’s very best horses and ponies. Championships, some dating back decades, are the ambition of most riders and owners and to win one usually sparks celebrations that go on well after the horses are rugged and stabled.
