A horse refuge that’s home to Europe’s tallest horse is in imminent danger of closure.

The Horse Refuge in Wittersham, Kent, needs £600,000 this month to secure the land it has been on since 1995. The land is up for sale and the refuge is to be evicted if the money isn’t found.

The refuge is run by Sara Ross and currently has 50 permanent residents who are too ill, old or abused to be moved or re-homed.

One of the refuge’s most famous residents is Europe’s tallest horse Duke, a six-year-old Shire who measures 19.3hh.

He was taken in by Sara after his owner died unexpectedly and he was facing euthanasia. His quarters alone cost £5,000.

Other horses who have been through the refuge are rehomed to loving new homes whenever possible.
