Equine Charity perpares for a tough winter

The Horse Rescue Fund, an independent equine rescue charity, faces an uncertain future following the recession – can you help?

The charity, established sixty years ago, is battling rapidly rising running costs caused by the effects of the recession and a shortage of hay this year.

Poor summer growing conditions have meant that owners have started feeding hay much earlier this year due to a lack of good grazing, whilst the hay crop is down as much as 50%.

With feed bills expected to rise, many more animals could soon need help from equine welfare organisations such as the Horse Rescue Fund, as owners struggle to cope with additional costs.

In preparation, the charity must raise more money to be able to fund the admission of more horses and ponies and to care for those in permanent care.

The charity is appealing for people who can offer these equines a home or help with its fundraising efforts.  Donations are always welcome through the web site or sent direct to Woodstock Farm, Toft Monks, Beccles, Suffolk, whilst some of the permanent residents can be sponsored on an annual basis for as little as £10.

A gift of just £5 will help to pay for one bale of hay, and with the average large horse eating up to five bales a week during the winter and a set of shoes which can last up to seven weeks costing £65 it gives an idea of how much money is required to keep the doors open for any needy horses or ponies this winter.

Currently, the Horse Rescue Fund has horses and ponies waiting to go out into long term approved foster homes.  These include ridden equines and companion horses and ponies.
