A tiny miniature horse born at the weekend is already being aimed at the record books.

Little Pinto colt Einstein was born in New Hampshire, US, weighing in at just 6lbs and standing 14in tall.

He was born at the Tiz A Miniature Horse Farm, where they are well used to mini-equines. But Einstein is the smallest they’ve yet foaled.

Farm owner Judy Smith said: “The average newborn mini-horse is 21 inches tall and weighs 18lbs.

"He's not a preemie. He was born three days after his due date."

She added that in more than 20 years of raising miniature horses, she has never seen one so small.

Soon after his birth the breeders and owners contacted the Guinness Book of World Records to see whether Einstein qualifies as the world's smallest horse.

The current holder of the record is Thumbelina, a chestnut mare born in 2001 near St. Louis. Thumbelina was born 11” tall and 8.5lbs. She now stands 17.5” tall and weighs 58lbs.

Einstein has another distinction over Thumbelina. He is a perfectly-proportioned horse where she is a dwarf.
