The event that signifies the start of cross-country season kicks off this weekend.

Poplar Park Horse Trials in Suffolk takes place over undulating grassland and semi heath – giving top riders the chance to stretch their horses’ legs after the long winter break.

Big names due to take part include Sharon Hunt, Matt and Marie Ryan, Piggy French and Nigel Taylor.

Sharon, ranked among the top 50 eventers in the world, said: “I like the course at Poplar and it is an excellent starter event for the horses, as it's early in the season and the ground is always very good.”

With so much to offer both rider and spectator, Poplar Park Horse Trials is a great way to spend the weekend.

It is usually possible to find a ring-side position to watch the show jumping and dressage, and the cross-country course is exciting and testing - a real chance to see the professionals in action.

There are also plenty of tradestands for those country and equestrian bargains.
