What is SPANA?
SPANA is the charity for the working animals of the world.
Whilst we keep a vast number of horses in the UK, there are very few true working horses. By contrast in the developing world horses and donkeys are a necessity, a work-horse, vital for the livelihoods of the people that rely on them. Horses are used as the equivalent of trucks and tractors, providing their impoverished owners with the only means of getting their goods to market, ploughing fields and bringing water home from the well. The income the owners make from using their animals will help buy food, clothes and send their children to school.
The majority of horse owners in the UK love and care for their horses. We are fortunate that if they become ill we have access to state of the art veterinary care, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Animals in the developing world are not so lucky. When a working animal falls sick, or becomes injured there is rarely a qualified vet nearby. There is a lack of the basic resources we take for granted; trained farriers and harness makers are scarce or non-existent.
This is why SPANA’s work is so imperative. SPANA improves the lives of working animals in three ways: free veterinary care, education & training and emergency response.
