Secure your lorry or trailer

Use a wheel clamp, security post – or both – and fit an alarm. Even a simple battery-powered alarm will draw attention if someone starts tampering with your trailer and will deter would-be thieves. Try to park in a highly visible area or under a security light. Try to personalise the vehicle in some way to make it unique to you and more readily identifiable.

PC Rachel Prestcott also advises painting your postcode on the roof of your trailer. “This is a good way of making sure it’s easily identifiable and allows police helicopters to spot it from the air,” she says.

Lock up your barrows

Although some thefts are clearly planned, many incidents are opportunistic and you can greatly reduce the likelihood of being targeted by making sure they don’t have an easy getaway. Lock wheelbarrows away or chain them using a wall anchor so that they can’t be used by passing thieves to wheel your precious tack away. “It has been known for cheeky thieves to use the victims’ own barrows to transport the stolen goods away,” says Gina.
