Where you keep your horse makes a huge difference to how much you enjoy him. Finding the right yard can mean having a fit, healthy horse in a safe and friendly environment, with all the facilities you need on hand. If it’s the wrong yard, you could be constantly struggling with injuries, poor progress and stress.

What do you need?

The first question to ask  yourself is, what is the minimum you require from a livery yard? And, perhaps more to the point, what does your horse need for his health and happiness? After that, you can add what you might want in an ideal world, such as visiting trainers and secure space for trailer parking.

Types of livery available

Some livery services are tailor-made for you and your horse – others are set out for you, and you will need to pay extra for additional services.  Make sure you know exactly what is included in your deal, and get a contract in writing outlining exactly what you are paying for, your responsibilities, the yard’s responsibilities, and the  notice period required by each of you should you wish to  terminate the agreement.
