Short winter days can make it difficult to ride, but here are simple ground work exercises to help maintain your horse’s fitness and mobility through the cold winter months.
When you first pick up your horse’s front leg, see what happens to the opposite back one. If your horse is tight, this back leg may come forwards. If so, replace the leg and start again.
- To do this exercise, slip one hand behind your horse’s elbow and keep your back straight and bottom tucked in and as you hold his lower leg. ‘Draw’ a circle with your knees as this will move your horse’s leg round.
- Circle the lower leg for five seconds, repeating this three times in both directions.
