Before we do any more jumping I want to make sure you’ve got a bit more control,” says Tim. He tells Rachel to walk Ed on a 20m circle. “Make a transition to trot, trot for six strides and then come back to walk. Bring your body back as you make the downward transition. Good.”

They quickly move on to canter to walk transitions. “Ride one full circle of canter and then come back to walk,” says Tim. Rachel has to ask several times before Ed comes back to walk.

“Pick up the canter and then try again,” Tim says. “Body back, heels down – imagine you’re doing an emergency stop. I want to see him responding to you. Good, the reaction time was much better there.”
