Whats the damage?

Stereotypical behaviour must be declared to a prospective buyer. It will be counted as an unsoundness at a pre-purchase vetting and, unless the horse has exceptional talents, will reduce his value. Before you take on such a horse, bear in mind that he may be unwelcome at some livery yards, and check with your insurers, too – exclusions sometimes apply to crib-biters and wind-suckers due to an association with colic.

But horses with ‘vices’ are often enjoyable to own and ride, and some compete with great success. Many people are sufficiently keen on a horse to put up with the behaviour, especially if it’s reflected in the price.
