Richard Maxwell gives his top tips to help your horse feel more comfortable if he hates having his feet handled...

Here you need to work on getting a foot lift, even for just a few seconds at first. Take a rope and drape it just below his fetlock. Once he accepts this, gently ask for him to lift his foot – even two seconds is enough at first. Don’t keep it up until he wants to snatch it back, release it before he defaults. With his back feet, a 12ft rope comes in handy as you can stand by his shoulder and avoid getting kicked, plus you can stay upright and balanced in case he pulls.

Repeating over time will increase his tolerance, enabling you to handle
his feet safely.
