Oliver Townend had a terrific year in 2009, which he finished off in style with a star appearance at Your Horse Live – of course!

He brought two of his favourite youngsters to the show, to demonstrate his start-up techniques for jumping and for some of the more advanced dressage movements.

Kicking off with the elegant Neo Du Breuil, a lightweight grey Oliver found in France and has high hopes for, he revealed his methods for teaching flying changes and lateral work while still keeping the horse relaxed and responsive.

Oliver then moved on to five-year-old bay, French Connection, who was being prepared for sale. Stable name Carl, the horse has previously given Oli a lively ride, but here he showed how to keep him calm and steady as he begins his jumping career.

Always a great showman, Oliver Townend entertained to the last – this is one video not to be missed…
