My 14-year-old mare pulled a shoulder muscle and my vet advised three week’s box rest. However, she was no better after this and appears to be in even more pain. Therapy has made no difference, so what should I do?

Vet Mark Lingard advises…
Ask your vet to re-examine her. He may have to anaesthetise the nerves and joints locally to identify the source of pain. Once it has been located, X-rays and ultrasound may be necessary to view the cause. Shoulder lameness can be caused by a joint problem, a strained ligament or a bursitis (swelling) at the point of the shoulder and usually take several weeks to settle.
