My yearling has two splints from tanking round the field and he is perfectly fine no lameness and we havent been marked down in shows at all. He got them as a 6 month old and still has them now at 19months, they are good and solid now but hopefully with him being young they will shrink.
There are two different types though hot and cold ones, the hot ones will cause lameness and be painfull, the smaller ones towards the back of the leg can interfere with the ligaments so have a good look. The majority cause no problems at all unless you carry on doing harsh road work or riding on hard ground. Small ones, high up under the knee are often more troublesome.
Its something you cant really prevent they can knock their legs and get them or from concussion. In extreme case you an have the splint bone removed but that is a drastic form of removing them.
DMSO can be used, there is no veterinary proof that it works it just seems to but you have to be extremely careful using it.
Hope this helps
