My Welsh pony windsucks on the haynet and the stable door – I’ve tried a collar with no success. I’m worried as he recently was ill with diarrhoea and slight colic, which I think was due to the windsucking. Advice please!

Vet Mark Lingard advises:
Some ways to tackle windsucking include increased turnout, collars, removing objects the horse can latch on to and even surgery on the horse’s neck muscles.
However, only in very extreme cases does it lead to recurrent bouts of colic. It could well be that your pony’s colic was due to the diarrhoea and not his windsucking at all. This behaviour worries humans more than horses, but if he only windsucks in his stable, give him more turnout and try to live with his vice.
