Cushing’s disease, caused by overactive adrenal glands, occurs in both people and horses.
In people, we also see Addison’s disease, caused by underactive adrenal glands. Is there an equine form of Addison’s disease?
Answer
By Your Horse
Vet Gayle Hallowell replies:
Addison’s disease has been reported in horses but is extremely rare. It can be secondary to worm damage of the adrenal glands and is known to follow very stressful events such as colic surgery.
The signs are vague and include depression, anorexia, weight loss, colic signs, poor coat condition and sometimes renal problems.
