hi!
getting a horse, any horse or pony fit is a long process. it needs to be done correctly.
starting off with feeding. if your riding your horse twice as hard, you need to think twice as hard on his feeding. what is your fittness for? as in i mean different horses need different fittnesses. A race horse will be fit in a differnt way to a showjumper or hunter. And a show horse is different again!
I suggest you have a lookat what you want him fit for. sit down and write out a plan and you HAVE to stick to it. lots of long walk to start off with and some trotting. then after he startsto show good signsin this stage, take it tp long strenuous trots. with ome short canters. after he is handling this well, add in some longer canters, and a few short gallops. Riding in sand and up hills are good cardio workouts for horses too. But please remember if your burning that extra fuel, you gotta put tat extra fuel in. lol my mare and i usually ride 15 km every morning and afternoon (7 mile) which isnt very far, but we trot most of this very briskly (32KMPH) as she loves to get out and about. anyway every horse is different and its difficult to say without seeing him. and we also have very different climates and i often have to ride before the sun is up because it gets so so hot here.
But i will suggest if you are going to be working him alot and its winter, is he stabled? or lives out? as this can affect the fitness routine aswell. clipping, even just a trace clip, can help HUGELY towards how he feels. anyway let me know if ive been of any help =)
