Try trotting poles - sqaure/flat ones are the best in case he stands on one. Put them on the ground to start with, then raise them up gradually as he gets stronger. Don't do it for long to start with and give him rest breaks to stretch down and out otherwise he will get fatigued and bored very easily. Only do it once or twice a week, not every day as his muscles need time to recover and build up.
