My horse is very nervous in traffic, to the point where she becomes uncontrollable. Can you help?

Instructor Jane Baker advises:
This is two problems, which are very closely connected – nerves and lack of control. I’m assuming that the horse is relaxed and well-behaved in the arena or away from traffic, so you have several options, including:
● Arranging for him to be turned out in a field near a road, which may help desensitise him to traffic.
● Hack him out in the company of quiet and relaxed horses, and with experienced riders who know how to ‘shield’ your horse from traffic.
● In company, ride out at quieter times of the day and along quiet roads, to build up his confidence.
● Have someone who’s experienced with nervous horses ride him out for you.
If you’re expecting him to be frightened, your tension can exaggerate any fear he feels.
Some horses will improve with time and patience. But others remain unpredictable and, therefore, dangerous. If this is the case, it’s far better if the horse’s routine doesn’t involve traffic. If hacking out is your main activity then he may need to find a new home. This may sound harsh but, if you enjoy hacking and he is genuinely frightened, neither of you will be happy.
