I always check my diagonal when I’m schooling but never out hacking. Does it really matter which diagonal I’m on when I’m trotting on a hack?

Yes, it does. Try and change your diagonal regularly while trotting on a hack because, if you stay on the same one, your horse may become uneven and will feel unbalanced. Make a note of which diagonal you’re on when you start trotting and change every few minutes.
